Age At Home Consulting offers the following products and/or services:
» Certified Aging in Place Specialists (2)
»» Occupational Therapists (2)

After 30 years as an Occupational Therapist (graduated summa cum laude in 1979) in multiple adult/geriatric settings (everything from the ICU to home health), additional experience in sales and marketing of medical equipment, including Durable Medical Equipment (DME), development of a large base of contacts as a Clinical Liaison for a prominent rehabilitation hospital on the Central Coast of California, I’ve formalized my experience, resources and referral contacts into an Aging in Place consulting business. With my extensive continuing education on Aging-in-Place, and attainment of the NAHB’s (National Association of Home Builders) CAPS certification (Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist), I am committed to keeping seniors in their own homes as long as possible.
Numerous NAHB, AARP and CDC documents identify the success of involving Occupational Therapists in home modifications and fall prevention. As an Occupational Therapist and Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist, I'm most interested in consulting with homeowners, seniors, or their adult children who are concerned about continuing to live safely, independently and as productively as possible in their own homes. I evaluate them AND their home, then make recommendations for home modifications or adaptations that are specific to THEIR lifestyle needs, THEIR functional abilities, and THEIR health (physical, cognitive, sensory) concerns as they age, and, at their request, I can collaborate with their contractor or designer to most effectively meet those needs incorporating principles of universal, adaptable, accessible and/or visitable design in my recommendations.
Clients considering home remodeling (especially 'Baby-Boomers') who anticipate staying in their own home beyond retirement, or having aging parents move in with them could benefit from my consulting services BEFORE beginning their work with a contractor or designer. Additionally, I provide resources for home modifications recommended, fall prevention education, equipment recommendation and training, caregiver training empowering my clients to more safely and independently AGE AT HOME for many years to come. Client advocacy (often desirable with special needs clients during the stressful process of remodeling) is an additional valuable service I can provide.
Contractors or designers working with aging-in-place or special needs clients may want to recommend my consultation and use the report generated to produce the best possible outcomes for these homeowners.
Personal experience in working with contractors on large, challenging remodel/repair projects of a different nature has provided me with an empathy for the nature of the professions of builder, designer, carpenter, plumbers/sewer experts, electrician, framer, roofers, drywall hanger, plasterer, window and door installers, tile layers, concrete and masonry experts, deck and flooring installers, heating and air conditioning experts… to name a few!!! While the contractor team is different from the medical rehab team—its diversity, need for communication and leadership, and continuous interface with the client is quite similar and is a team where I can be proud to contribute my expertise.
As a founding member of COTN (Coastal Occupational Therapy Network), I am privileged to have OT colleagues throughout Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties with specialized training in various skill areas useful to the Age in Place process, including Low Vision experts and DME specialists. As a member of AOTA's (American Occupational Therapy Association) Home and Community Health--Home Modifications Specialty Interest Section, I have a large nationwide group of resourceful, adaptive Occupational Therapists to lend their expertise with any question we may have.
In addition, as an Occupational Therapist experienced in teaching “Skills for the Job of Living”, I am available to provide fall prevention workshops, assess alternate Age in Place living arrangements for home modification, (i.e. assisted living, group homes, etc.), work with life planners for catastrophic insurance payment cases, work with designers for new project construction.
